Travel Tips

Passports

You need a passport. You (Americans) need one now to go anywhere out of the United States. If you don't have a passport go here to see how to get one. Those of you who do, check to make sure they are not expiring anytime soon or already expired.

Flights

You can fly directly to Cozumel (airport code CZM) pretty easily. It is possible to fly into Cancun but can be a bit more of a challenge getting to Cozumel. If you decide to fly into Cancun, you need to take bus from the airport to the main bus station in Cancun and then switch busses to Playa del Carmen. The bus station in Playa del Carmen is only about 3 blocks from the ferry terminal to Cozumel. Ferries go every hour. Flying to Cancun might save you money but not time.

Transportation in Cozumel

Cozumel is a small island but things are not within walking distance. You can easily rent a car - check online with major car rental comapnies. Taxis are plentiful and are usually lined up in front of the resorts waiting for your cash or pesos. There's one main road that goes around the perimeter of the island. All of the development is primarily on the west coast. The east coast is dominated by deserted beaches just waiting to be explored.

Money

There's really no need to worry about converting your dollars to pesos. You can pay EVERWHERE with U.S. dollars. You will get pesos back in change though. For those who might want to exchange some money we have found that the best exchange rate is usually at an ATM. The "unofficial" exchange rate seems to always be 10 pesos to 1 dollar.

Weather / Apparel

Take some water shoes with you if you plan on getting in the water (without a kiteboard!) as there are sometimes rocks depending on which beach you are at due to Hurricane Wilma. Shorts and t-shirts during the day and maybe some casual "resort-casual" atire for the evenings for going into town, etc.

Cozumel is nice this time of year. The average temps for June are 87 degrees during the day and 74 at night. To check the current weather in Cozumel you can click here.

You may want to bring some insect repellent.

Activities

I know some of you will be bringing kiteboarding gear. For those of you who do not kiteboard, there is some of the best diving and snorkeling in the world in Cozumel. There's also Mayan ruins to see and Vladia will be "Julie the Cozumel Bar Director" if Anthony is kiteboarding.
